Not only does it take a lot of curcumin to do the trick. It’s also not very well absorbed by the human body.
So, to make things easier. Most people seeking pain relief from turmeric and curcumin will take an extract which has a lot more curcumin in it than ordinary, off-the-shelf, turmeric.
You can buy an extract with additional added pepper. This is because pepperine (seriously) in the black pepper has been shown to boost the uptake of curcumin in the body.
If you don’t want to take pepper like that, you can always add it to a meal around the same time as you take the extract.
Speaking of meals… curcumin also dissolves well in fats. So, a slightly fatty meal (such as a salad with olive oil) might be the best companion for that extract too.

The Science Supports This
You may be thinking at this point, “but it’s a herbal remedy, aren’t they a load of garbage?” Well, it’s fair to say that the alternative health industry has not always been entirely honest about its claims but curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties are well documented.
A paper by Chainani Wu in 2003, published on Pub Med, showed the first indication that curcumin had anti-inflammatory properties. This was backed up by Ajay Goel et al. during their research into curcumin and its effects on human colon cancers. In short, some alternative health may be on shaky grounds, but curcumin’s pedigree is a different beast entirely. It’s fully supported by the science.

- It reduces the risks of brain diseases. Nobody wants Alzheimer’s, do they? Well, curcumin’s been linked to reducing the risks of getting it. - It drops the risks of heart disease too. Many heart diseases are a direct result of inflammation.
